About the position

The Surgical Technologist position at Evansville Surgery Center involves assisting in surgical procedures under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The role focuses on preparing the operating room, maintaining sterile techniques, and ensuring the availability of necessary instruments and supplies for surgeries.

Responsibilities

  • Functions as a Surgical Technologist in the operating room according to ESC Policies & Procedures.
  • Assists with gowning and gloving other members of the surgical team.
  • Assists with the preparation of the operating room for surgical procedures.
  • Assists with skin preparations and draping of patients.
  • Assists with care, preparation, maintenance, and after-care of sterile and unsterile supplies, instruments, and equipment.
  • Maintains strict adherence to sterile technique and monitors other members of the surgical team.
  • Handles specimens in accordance with ESC Policies & Procedures.
  • Removes drapes at the end of the procedure, cleanses the patient of prep solution, and applies dressings as instructed.
  • Cleans instruments and equipment after use and returns them to the proper area for storage and processing.
  • Respects patients' right to privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.
  • Differentiates sterilization methods required for specific instruments, equipment, and supplies, and demonstrates safe and accurate use and care of sterilizing equipment.
  • Participates on various committees as assigned.
  • Assists with housekeeping duties as necessary to provide clean and safe equipment.
  • Participates in sponge, instrument, and needle count with the circulating nurse per ESC Policies & Procedures.
  • Participates in departmental meetings, orientation of new personnel, and in-service programs as assigned.
  • Assists with stocking, replenishing, and preparation of supplies.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical/psycho-social/cognitive/related criteria appropriate to the age of the patient.
  • Recognizes legal and policy limits of individual responsibility.
  • Participates in and complies with Performance Improvement Program.
  • Assists in updating and maintaining physician preference cards.
  • Completes annual mandatory in-services, as well as other in-services offered that are relevant to the operating room.
  • Maintains confidential passwords for computer learning.
  • Takes responsibility for completion of learning assignments on time.
  • Uses maximum care and caution when handling surgical equipment and instruments.
  • Responsible for conservation and control of supplies utilized.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or GED required.
  • Successful completion of Operating Room / Surgical Technologist Program.
  • Certification in Surgical Technology preferred.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (CPR) required.
  • Two (2) years operating room experience as a Surgical Technologist preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification in Surgical Technology preferred.
  • Two (2) years operating room experience as a Surgical Technologist preferred.
