About the position

The Denver Crime Laboratory is seeking a Criminalist I to support the Denver Police Department in crime scene investigations. This seniority-based position involves working night shifts, including weekends and holidays, to aid in the collection and preservation of evidence from various crime scenes across the city. The role requires a strong commitment to forensic standards and the ability to handle challenging situations effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, collect, preserve, and package biological evidence, friction ridge evidence, impression evidence, and other physical evidence according to established standards and existing standard operating procedures.
  • Document crime scenes using various forensic techniques and processes including digital photography, digital video, laser scanning, and diagramming software.
  • Prepare technical departmental reports.
  • Maintain proper chain of custody on evidence and proper packaging to preserve and prevent contamination.
  • Testify in court regarding the details of their involvement with crime scene processing.
  • Assist with training of Criminalist I's and Crime Scene Technicians.
  • Resolve problems encountered during daily operations.
  • Perform work following ISO 17025 standards, including standard operating procedures and quality assurance manual guidelines.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by direct Supervisors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
  • One (1) year of experience in crime scene processing; digital multimedia editing and video enhancement; and/or an internship with a forensic laboratory or criminal justice organization.
  • Valid Driver's License at the time of application.
  • Ability to obtain IAI Certified Crime Scene Investigator, Level 1 certification within two years of employment.
  • Ability to complete LEVA Levels 1-4 training within 4 years of employment.
