About the position

The Criminal Investigator (Special Agent) position at the Internal Revenue Service involves planning and conducting investigations related to criminal violations of tax administration and financial crimes. The role requires the ability to handle complex cases that may involve indirect methods of proof and sophisticated financial manipulations. Special Agents are responsible for enforcing laws, testifying in court, and conducting various investigative activities, including surveillance and undercover operations. This position demands excellent physical condition and the ability to work in challenging environments.

Responsibilities

• Plan and conduct investigations related to criminal statutes of tax administration and financial crimes.
• Analyze complex financial records and evidence to reconstruct incomplete data.
• Testify as a government witness and assist in trial preparations.
• Conduct enforcement activities such as surveillance, armed escorts, and undercover operations.
• Evaluate and recommend actions based on information to identify areas of noncompliance.
• Function as a team leader or expert consultant in information gathering.

Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship or National status with proof of citizenship required.
• One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in Federal Government, related to criminal investigations.
• Knowledge of accounting and legal principles relevant to criminal investigations.
• Experience in leading Federal enforcement actions including search, seizure, and arrest warrants.
• Ability to pass a medical examination and meet physical fitness requirements.

Nice-to-haves

• Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant field.
• Three years of progressively higher-level graduate education in fields related to accounting or finance.
