About The Position

The Crew Chief supervises drivers and labor crews responsible for maintaining City parks and recreation facilities, public service infrastructure, equipment, and streets throughout the City of Douglasville, and ensures work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with departmental standards. The Crew Chief performs duties across divisions as operational needs require, with responsibilities considered interchangeable among divisions with similar functions.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in a related work environment
  • A valid State of Georgia Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required and must be obtained within twelve (12) months of employment.
  • Knowledge of the geographic layout of City streets, parks, facilities, and rights-of-way, including traffic patterns and service routes.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards required safety precautions, and applicable OSHA, Georgia DOT, traffic laws, ordinances, and operational regulations.
  • Knowledge of departmental and City policies, procedures, rules, and standards governing public services and parks operations.
  • Knowledge of facility, grounds, athletic field, turf maintenance practices, and minor equipment and vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Skill to safely operate assigned vehicles, tools, and heavy equipment under varying weather, traffic, and field conditions.
  • Skill to identify equipment malfunctions, assess maintenance needs, and coordinate timely corrective actions.
  • Skill to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, and interact tactfully with employees, supervisors, and the public.
  • Ability to supervise, direct, and evaluate the work of assigned personnel to efficiently achieve departmental objectives while enforcing safety standards.
  • Ability to respond to operational needs on an on-call basis, evaluate service issues or complaints, and work effectively as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and assists with the Sanitation Division including the operation of pickup trucks, garbage trucks such as Rear-loaders, Front-loaders, Roll-off trucks and other related heavy equipment when needed.
  • Supervises and assists with the Sanitation Department for residential and commercial services when necessary.
  • Assists with safety training for labor crews and ensures appropriate safety standards and procedures are consistently followed on all assignments.
  • Inspects and evaluates completed work to ensure compliance with established standards, specifications, and safety requirements.
  • Trains laborers and equipment operators by instructing them in proper work methods, rules, standards, and safe equipment operation.
  • Facilitate problem solving related to equipment scheduling, work assignments, and employee concerns or complaints as needed to maintain efficient operations.
  • Coordinates and submits recommendations for the purchase of equipment necessary to departmental operations and maintains inventory records for relevant equipment.
  • Maintains the appearance, condition, and proper functioning of assigned tools, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Supervises and manages inmate crew chiefs and community service workers when assigned to departmental projects.
  • Assists with facilities and grounds maintenance as needed to support overall departmental operations.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
