About the position

The CPS Conservatorship Worker is responsible for overseeing the welfare of children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. This role involves working closely with families, legal parties, and community resources to ensure that children in conservatorship receive the necessary support and services to achieve a safe and permanent living situation. The position requires effective communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work in emotionally charged environments.

Responsibilities

  • Receive cases from investigators after children are removed from their homes and placed in CPS conservatorship.
  • Determine each child's needs and ensure appropriate referrals for testing, evaluations, and further assessments are made.
  • Ensure all services are focused on achieving positive permanency for children.
  • Work with children, families, and communities to plan for a child's permanency.
  • Identify potential permanency resources for the child through ongoing contact with parents and family members.
  • Search for potential kinship providers throughout the case.
  • Complete home studies of family members or friends who might care for the child.
  • Meet with parents to assess risk and safety issues and refer them to appropriate services.
  • Discuss with parents their progress towards making necessary behavior changes for child safety.
  • Meet with children, parents, and caregivers in various settings to assess needs and progress.
  • Collaborate with a Placement Team for necessary placements.
  • Participate in meetings and conferences at convenient times for family members.
  • Visit children monthly to assess their feelings of safety and discuss their needs and wishes.
  • Attend and participate in court hearings, preparing reports and testifying as needed.
  • Keep all parties informed about the child's circumstances and significant events.
  • Work with the department's attorney to prepare for contested court hearings.
  • Support kinship caregivers and foster parents in caring for the child placed with them.
  • Transition children home during reunification services and provide support until the case is closed.
  • Supervise adoptive placements until finalization or transfer to an adoption caseworker.
  • Document case records by completing forms, narratives, and reports.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Promote and demonstrate respect for cultural diversity among all contacts.

Requirements

  • An accredited Bachelor's degree OR an accredited Associate's degree plus two years of relevant work experience OR 60 accredited college credit hours plus two years of relevant work experience OR 90 accredited college credit hours plus one year of relevant work experience.
  • Knowledge of child development and family dynamics.
  • Skill in effective verbal and written communication.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Skill in problem-solving techniques.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer.
  • Ability to travel and attend child and family visits after 5pm.
  • Ability to be on call on a rotating basis and work irregular hours.
  • Ability to work in an emotionally charged environment and conduct home visits in challenging conditions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in Social Work may qualify for an increase at the point of hire.
