About the position

The Counselor - Substance Use position at SMA Healthcare involves assessing clients' conditions and needs to determine eligibility for programs, developing service and treatment plans, and providing individual and group counseling. The role requires maintaining documentation, advocating for clients, and linking them to community resources. Counselors will also conduct educational programs, participate in meetings, and ensure client accountability. The position demands effective communication with various stakeholders and the ability to manage aggressive clients safely.

Responsibilities

  • Assess client's condition and needs to determine eligibility according to program requirements.
  • Develop a service/treatment plan with client and establish attainable goals.
  • Update service/treatment plans when required and ensure documentation meets standards.
  • Provide didactic, life skills, and process groups, individual counseling, and oversee non-clinical services.
  • Link clients to available community resources and maintain an up-to-date roster of resources.
  • Advocate to obtain services for clients and aid in developing reentry transition plans.
  • Observe behavior patterns and implement behavior modification techniques.
  • Document all contacts and services provided through various tracking forms.
  • Develop and present educational programs for families and the community.
  • Plan and conduct meetings related to client care and program operations.
  • Communicate with the public, service agencies, and criminal justice system.
  • Control verbally and/or physically abusive clients and perform aggression control techniques.
  • Provide immediate crisis intervention and follow relevant policies.
  • Participate in in-service training and provide transportation for clients as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in social sciences with two years of experience in chemical addictions or mental health counseling.
  • Bachelor's degree in any area with three years of experience in chemical addictions or mental health counseling.
  • Master's degree in social sciences with one year of experience in chemical addictions or mental health counseling.
  • Master's degree in any area with two years of experience in chemical addictions or mental health counseling.
  • Doctorate in chemical addiction counseling or mental health counseling.
  • Doctorate in any unrelated area with one year of experience in chemical addiction counseling or mental health counseling.
  • Current Certification as a Certified Addictions Professional (CAP) or similar is preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of mental illnesses, emotional disturbances, addiction, and co-occurring disorders.
  • Knowledge of behavior management and counseling principles.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system and therapeutic techniques.
