About the position

The Counselor - Substance Abuse position at SMA Healthcare involves conducting individual, group, and family psychotherapy as indicated by diagnosis and individualized treatment plans. The role requires comprehensive assessments of psychiatric history, mental status, and diagnosis, as well as the development and ongoing adjustment of treatment plans based on clients' needs. Counselors will educate and support clients and their families, advocate for clients' rights, and document client progress in the electronic medical record (EMR). The position also involves collaboration with a multidisciplinary team and coordination with outside services to ensure clients' needs are met.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct individual, group, and/or family psychotherapy as indicated by diagnosis and individualized treatment plan.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessment of psychiatric history, mental status, and diagnosis.
  • Develop an individual treatment plan and ensure immediate changes are made as clients' needs change.
  • Provide ongoing assessment of clients' co-occurring symptoms and response to treatment.
  • Educate and support clients and their families, advocating for clients' rights and preferences.
  • Document client progress in SMA's EMR according to established methods and procedures.
  • Participate in staff organization meetings and treatment planning review meetings.
  • Work closely with team members and collaborating agencies to ensure the best possible client outcomes.
  • Coordinate with outside services to address clients' needs.
  • Provide practical help and support, advocacy, coordination, and training to help clients obtain necessities of daily living.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited school in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling or other relevant Human Services discipline required.
  • Master's Degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling or other relevant Human Services discipline preferred.
  • Certification as an Addictions Professional or Licensed to practice as a Clinical Social Worker, Mental Health Counselor, or Marriage and Family Therapist preferred.
  • Experience with the target population preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of the most recent DSM version and ability to formulate a diagnosis.
  • Strong clinical knowledge and skill in both substance abuse and mental health therapy.
  • Ability to quickly assess and diagnose persons for treatment and formulate realistic, measurable goals and objectives.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise written reports.
  • Ability to handle verbally and/or physically abusive and aggressive persons.
  • Knowledge of insurance and Medicaid billing and services.
  • Knowledge of managed care and different payer sources.
