About the position

The Counselor - Adult Outpatient position at SMA Healthcare involves providing therapeutic services to adults in an outpatient setting. The role focuses on conducting individual, group, and family psychotherapy, developing treatment plans, and coordinating care with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal client outcomes. The counselor will assess clients' mental health and substance use issues, advocate for their rights, and document progress in electronic medical records.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct individual, group, and/or family psychotherapy as indicated by diagnosis and individualized treatment plan.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of psychiatric history, mental status, and diagnosis.
  • Develop individual treatment plans and make immediate changes as clients' needs change.
  • Provide ongoing assessment of clients' co-occurring symptoms and response to treatment.
  • Educate and support clients and their families, advocating for clients' rights and preferences.
  • Document client progress in SMA's EMR according to established methods and procedures.
  • Participate in staff organization meetings and treatment planning review meetings.
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary team members and collaborating agencies to ensure the best possible client outcomes.
  • Coordinate with outside services to address clients' needs.
  • Provide practical help, support, advocacy, and training to help clients obtain necessities of daily living.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or other relevant Human Services discipline required.
  • Certification as an Addictions Professional or Licensed to practice as a Clinical Social Worker, Mental Health Counselor, or Marriage and Family Therapist preferred.
  • Experience with the target population preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of the most recent DSM version and ability to formulate a diagnosis.
  • Strong clinical knowledge and skill in both substance abuse and mental health therapy.
  • Knowledge of clinical assessment process, treatment planning, and therapy techniques.
  • Ability to quickly assess and diagnose persons for treatment and formulate realistic goals and objectives.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and professionals.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise written reports.
  • Ability to handle verbally and/or physically abusive persons and utilize aggression control techniques.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with the target population preferred.
  • Knowledge of insurance and Medicaid billing and services.
  • Knowledge of managed care and different payer sources.
