About the position

The Corrections Officer (Certified) position at Escambia County's Corrections Department is responsible for the care, custody, movement, and control of inmates within the facility. This role involves monitoring inmate behavior, conducting headcounts, supervising inmate work crews, and ensuring the safety and security of both personnel and the public. The position requires adherence to strict ethical standards and the ability to respond to emergencies, making it critical for maintaining order within the correctional environment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the care, custody, and control of inmates by monitoring behavior and conducting routine headcounts.
  • Supervise and direct inmate crews on maintenance, operations, farming, and construction projects.
  • Conduct internal security checks and meal distribution, monitoring dormitories for inappropriate activity.
  • Book new inmates into the facility and process inmates for release, including verifying warrants and conducting searches.
  • Transport inmates to and from outside facilities for medical, dental, and court appointments.
  • Prepare and maintain various forms, reports, logs, and records related to inmate activities.
  • Investigate attempted escapes and conduct searches for escaped inmates, applying proper arrest techniques.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.)
  • Minimum age of 18
  • Certification by the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission in Corrections
  • Valid driver's license from state of residence
  • Certification by the State of Florida as an Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic (for positions assigned to the Infirmary)
  • Knowledge of criminal law, inmate rights, self-defense techniques, and correctional facility procedures.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in emergency response work
  • Knowledge of first aid and CPR methods
  • Familiarity with courtroom practices and procedures.
