About The Position

The Wyoming Department of Corrections is committed to public safety and high correctional standards, as well as a safe, supportive working environment for our employees. We are now seeking Correctional Officers for the Wyoming Honor Conservation Camp in Newcastle, Wyoming. The Wyoming Honor Conservation Camp (WHCC) is a minimum-level correctional facility responsible for housing nearly 300 inmates. This position is essential for maintaining the institution's safety and security and is considered a Law Enforcement position, receiving the 20-year retirement and state benefits package. This is an entry-level position, and career/growth opportunities are available.

Requirements

  • All successful candidates will be required to complete an initial training period and be awarded Correctional Officer Certification by the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) Commission within one year of initial appointment.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Must not have a felony or domestic violence conviction.
  • Knowledge of security measures, techniques, and precautions necessary to maintain a safe and secure institution.
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 0-1 year of progressive work experience in a Correctional Setting

Responsibilities

  • Enforcement of rules and regulations.
  • Responding to post orders of varied assigned posts.
  • Supervising inmates in the performance of various jobs; modeling appropriate, pro-social behavior.
  • Assisting in a variety of searches, including checking for contraband items.
  • Observing daily inmate living, programming, work areas, and the perimeter fence line, reporting security violations.
  • Conducting daily scheduled counts of inmates.
  • Assuming duties of housing control centers, central control centers, and inmate living areas, monitoring inmate movements.
  • Becoming familiar with inmate names and characteristics for easier identification of inmate movements and infractions.
  • Assisting in restraining unruly inmates, utilizing the minimum amount of force required.
  • Assisting in transporting inmates within and off institution boundaries, including inter- and intra-state predetermined destinations.
  • Assisting in processing newly incarcerated inmates or the appropriate processing of released inmates.
  • Attending required training to perform duties at an acceptable level.
