About the position

The Correctional Officer at Washington County Jail is responsible for maintaining safety, security, and order within the facility. This role involves direct supervision of inmates, enforcement of facility rules, and responding to emergencies. Officers are trained in mental health crisis intervention and must remain calm in stressful situations. The position requires a commitment to public safety and the ability to handle various responsibilities related to inmate management and facility operations.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain peace, security, and safety within the Washington County Jail.
  • Enforce facility rules and maintain order among inmates.
  • Directly supervise daily activities of inmates and search for contraband and weapons.
  • Complete facility inspections and write reports on inmate conduct and behaviors.
  • Process individuals received at Intake/Master Control, including fingerprinting and obtaining booking information.
  • Supervise, control, and escort inmates, visitors, staff, and vendors, ensuring authorized movement.
  • Determine security risks of prisoners going to court and escort them accordingly.
  • Deescalate disturbances and altercations within the jail.
  • Record court data accurately regarding persons in custody and sentencing orders.
  • Act as a liaison between various programs and departments, including probation officers and nurses.
  • Conduct well-being checks of housing units and initiate counts of inmates at regular intervals.
  • Maintain control and discipline, including the use of physical restraint when necessary.
  • Supervise inmates in housing units and enforce rules while documenting behaviors.
  • Ensure proper security during inmate transportation and complete transportation orders accurately.
  • Respond to emergency situations in the jail, administering basic first aid as necessary.
  • Operate various technology systems and dispense medication under supervision.
  • Participate in auxiliary posts and work teams as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Two years of related work experience in corrections, law enforcement, security, military, or human services, or two years of post-secondary education in a related field.
  • Valid driver's license required for individuals operating a motor vehicle for county business.
  • Ability to pass testing/interview process, psychological examination, background investigation, physical examination, and drug test.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in any field of study.
  • Associate's degree in corrections, law enforcement, psychology, sociology, or criminology.
  • One year of paid experience in corrections, law enforcement, mental health, or emergency medical services.
  • Two or more years of paid experience in the U.S. Armed Services.
  • Three or more years of paid experience in the security services field.
