The hourly Transit Operator job offers a paid training program that starts you on your way to being part of an organization that values their employees and has a passion for serving the community. This posting is for multiple hourly positions.

Requirements

  • Grade 12 or equivalent with a minimum of 3 years related experience
  • Strong customer service focus with a minimum of 2 years of experience in a customer service role dealing face to face with the public
  • Able to meet the physical requirements of the job, which include the ability to perform various physical tasks as part of the job duties, stand/walk for extended periods of time, operating bus controls, and aiding passengers with wheelchairs or strollers
  • Must be able to pass a pre-hire tablet-based assessment and also an on-road evaluation on a bus provided by Strathcona County Transit
  • Hold a valid Class 1, 2, 4 or 5 Alberta Driver’s license (non-probationary)
  • Held a valid license for the last 5 consecutive years
  • Be able to provide a 5-year Commercial Driver’s Abstract (current within 14 days of request) with: No past or pending license suspensions or Criminal Code suspensions or convictions within the last 5 years, No more than 3 demerits, No more than one moving violation/conviction within the last 5 years, Any non-driving related suspensions of registry services, if indicated, must show a reinstatement date
  • Submission of a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check is required upon offer
  • Successful passing of a pre-employment drug and alcohol test (which includes THC), as this is a safety sensitive position
  • Selected applicants must pass all assessments, testing and training
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Sherwood Park, downtown Edmonton core and University of Alberta areas preferred
  • Experience working with a variety of people including those who have physical or functional limitation would be considered an asset
  • Class 4 and 5 Candidates: At the candidate’s expense, complete a Class 2 Driver’s Medical exam prior to starting training and At the candidate’s expense, complete a written class 2 exam at a registry in the first week of training Are required to pass a Class 2 road exam after two weeks of training Will attend an air-brakes course after 1 week of training At the candidate’s expense, complete a written air-brakes exam at a registry after taking the air-brakes course Will be required to sign a return in service agreement with a term of 1 year

Responsibilities

  • Operate a conventional transit vehicle in order to provide reliable passenger transportation
  • Successfully perform scheduled daily assigned work (fixed routes or charters); strive to ensure buses are on-time and communicate effectively with Dispatch
  • Provide excellent customer service to ensure overall customer satisfaction and interact with customers, road users and other staff in a courteous, professional manner; provide a variety of general public information to customers upon request (i.e., transit routes, destinations, fares, procedures, etc.)
  • Ensure safe bus operations; conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections
  • Collect passenger information (passenger counts, standees) as required
  • Operate buses safely and in accordance with all laws, regulations, Strathcona County policies, and department procedures
  • Provide professional service using effective communication skills to facilitate positive interactions with customers and coworkers
