About the position

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Consultant, Roadway Engineer for our Raleigh, NC office. The successful candidate should have experience in civil/roadway design and plans production for traditional delivery and/or alternative delivery projects. Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively as part of a multi-discipline team of engineers to execute project work on multiple concurrent projects.
  • Review, monitor and/or develop complex layouts, sketches, plans, specifications and estimates, correspondence, and reports for new/widened roadways, intersection improvements, bike and pedestrian facilities.
  • Lead project tasks or assist project managers with project coordination and collaboration efforts, including tasks that may require coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
  • Demonstrate advanced corridor modeling techniques and problem-solving skills during the development of the project.
  • Coordinate with other design disciplines such as structures, hydraulics, traffic, and utilities, etc.
  • Collect, compile, and analyze data from the physical work site, surveys, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
  • Regularly coordinate and communicate with project teams, manager, and civil team. Attend and participate in project team meetings.
  • Comply with regulatory requirements pertaining to the data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring systems, and record compliance and retention.
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and presentations that explain research and findings to improve, prevent, control, restore, or address design and/or construction issues or problems.
  • Interface with clients as needed and support business development initiatives.
  • Assist with preparation of technical proposals, scoping, and labor estimates.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and productive work relationships with employees, clients and other stakeholders.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, or closely related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant post education experience in engineering discipline and prior civil design experience.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Familiarity with AASHTO and NCDOT Design Guidelines and Standards.
  • Highly proficient of civil engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to permitting and project work-related issues.
  • Experience with infrastructure design, including a variety of rehabilitation and reconstruction, new design, and construction projects.
  • Proficiency in MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer/Geopak roadway design software; familiarity with NCDOT CADD/design software setup and standards; familiarity with AutoCAD and Autodesk Civil3D.
  • Experience with developing technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications, and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing intricate ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Demonstrated high-level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Works independently with minimal oversight and provides guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Proficient with technical writing, office automation, spreadsheets and other design tools.
  • Ability and desire to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.
  • Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, computations, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
  • Commitment to upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Flexible to meet a variety of schedules to meet business needs and able to prioritize responsibilities and quickly adapt to change in a pressure work environment.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
