About The Position

The Construction Volunteer Leader supports the Construction team staff in day-to-day activities and hosting groups of construction volunteers, helping them feel confident, capable, and connected to Habitat’s mission throughout their day on site. A typical shift includes helping set up tools, materials, and work areas to ensure sites are clean, organized, and ready for the day’s activities. You will greet volunteers and assist with basic check-in and orientation processes as directed by site staff. You will work alongside volunteers and team members to support simple construction tasks using basic tools, following established safety procedures and guidance from supervisors. You will help maintain a safe and orderly worksite by cleaning and organizing work areas, restocking supplies, and assisting with the care and storage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Throughout the day, you will follow direction from Construction team staff, help ensure materials and tools are used appropriately, and assist with site cleanup and closing tasks at the end of the shift.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age prior to start date of employment due to the use of construction tools, industry safety requirements, and jobsite conditions.
  • Skill at working within a team, following the guidance and direction of leadership
  • Ability to work efficiently, and effectively, and to use polite and respectful communication with leaders, coworkers, volunteers, and other guests
  • Ability and desire to maintain a clean and organized work environment
  • Ability, or willingness to learn, to use tools and equipment safely and correctly
  • Ability and desire to follow safety requirements and ensure volunteers do the same
  • Ability to adapt to a changing work environment, and learn new skills
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with people of diverse backgrounds and/or with varied language skills
  • Understanding and ability to embrace the volunteer perspective
  • Have reliable transportation to and from jobsites, or be able to use and navigate public transportation to be on time for scheduled workday
  • Any combination of formal education, paid work experience, unpaid/volunteer experience, and life experience will be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Any qualifying combination of education, certification, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Prior volunteer experience at a Habitat for Humanity construction site
  • Work, education, or volunteer experience in leading others, such as camp counselor, counselor-in-training, teaching, assistant-teaching, coaching, assistant coaching, leadership team, etc.
  • Current participation in or completion of a Construction Technology program

Responsibilities

  • Greet volunteers and assist with check-in and orientation activities as directed by site staff, including helping identify safety stations, break areas, and assigned work areas
  • Work alongside volunteers to complete daily homebuilding tasks assigned by construction site staff and support them by helping get answers to any questions or concerns
  • Learn and understand elements that contribute to successful volunteer experiences and support volunteers in having a consistently safe, positive, encouraging environment, motivating them to return
  • Communicate with volunteers and future homeowners in a respectful, accurate, and timely manner.
  • Work closely with supervisors and other site staff to learn proper techniques, procedures, and workflows
  • Assist with basic, hands-on construction tasks including, but not limited to, site prep, framing, flooring, finish carpentry, landscaping, and clean up.
  • Perform other general construction laborer duties
  • Use hand tools and basic power tools safely and correctly
  • Assist with organizing, inventorying, and putting away tools and equipment properly when no longer in use
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Follow all jobsite safety procedures, OSHA guidelines, and company policies
  • Clean and organize the site, including supplies areas, first aid areas, break areas, and work areas
  • Model safety practices and educate volunteers of safety guidelines
  • Distribute required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and task-specific PPE to volunteers, assisting them in proper wear/use of available PPE.
  • Attend safety trainings and/or complete all required safety online training
  • Conduct on-site orientations and safety talks to groups of volunteers and family partners with support of site staff
  • Provide prompt and thorough reporting of safety issues or concerns to the Construction Superintendent
