About the position

The Construction Laboratory Technician role at UL Solutions involves working in a laboratory environment to support testing and evaluation processes. The technician will utilize construction knowledge and power tool experience to build and adapt test setups, operate laboratory equipment, and communicate effectively with customers and engineering staff. This position requires a hands-on approach and the ability to adapt to changing situations while ensuring accurate testing and reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Builds and/or adapts setup and test equipment for performance of tests.
  • Examines test samples and reads blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, measuring instruments, and operational instructions.
  • Follows basically defined test plans and datasheets.
  • Builds and/or adapts setup and test equipment to new situations, based on data sheets and instructions from engineering department personnel.
  • Examines less complex customer samples and learns to operate appropriate tests for each case with necessary supervision/support.
  • Communicates with customers during setup and operation to ensure proper evaluation once competent.
  • Operates designated machines and special laboratory equipment.
  • Performs routine maintenance of designated test equipment and laboratory area.
  • May perform basic calibration of test equipment.
  • Reads and understands specific test standards and testing technology for scope of responsibility with necessary supervision/support.
  • Receives instructions from and reports data to engineers and engineering management once competent.
  • Operates with minimal supervision within defined limits of responsibility.
  • Records observed or calculated data on appropriate UL forms and prepares data sheets and test reports once competent.
  • Communicates with management and technical staff to provide suggestions for new equipment, processes, and forms to improve accuracy and efficiencies.

Requirements

  • Higher Secondary Education plus experience in Construction, or Fire related occupations preferred.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to interact with customers.
  • Proven ability to be innovative and creative.
  • Desire to work in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office suite is a must.
  • Ability to incorporate automation into day-to-day testing.
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs with assistance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Oracle, LabWare, and Flex (Preferred)
