About the position

The Construction Materials / Special Inspector position at Actalent involves performing inspections and testing of various construction materials for a range of projects. The role is essential in ensuring compliance with industry standards and specifications, contributing to the quality and safety of construction practices. The position requires a combination of technical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication with various stakeholders in the construction process.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately perform inspections for various materials (e.g., soils, concrete, and asphalt) for industrial, commercial, residential, or municipal projects in accordance with applicable standards.
  • Perform required testing per applicable ASTM and/or NCDOT testing methods.
  • Read and interpret design drawings and construction specifications.
  • Observe work procedures and verify compliance with job specifications.
  • Create and submit accurate and detailed inspection reports and test data sheets.
  • Interact and communicate with general contractors, site supervisors, architects, structural engineers, and client representatives.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience performing onsite inspections and testing of various materials.
  • Working knowledge of mathematics, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry, and ability to apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine field adjustments.
  • Proficient in the use of iPads, Microsoft Office, email, and OneDrive.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team setting, with an attention to detail and quality-minded focus.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel and twist, use hands to grasp and arms to reach, raise hands above head, sit, climb and balance, and work in confined spaces and heights.
  • Ability to safely lift and carry up to 50 pounds on a regular basis and up to 90 pounds on occasion.
  • Ability to walk over rough and uneven terrain and stand up to 8 hours on a normal day and up to 12 hours on occasion.
  • Ability to obtain and/or maintain ACI, ICC, and NCDOT certifications.
  • A valid driver's license and ability to drive.
  • Ability to pass a post-offer fit for duty test.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual, English/Spanish is a plus.
  • Desired Certifications (combination thereof): ACI / NCDOT Concrete Field Technician Level 1, ICC Soils, Hazmat Certification, NCDOT Concrete Field, NCDOT Intro to Asphalt, NCDOT Nuclear Density, NCDOT Erosion & Sediment Control.
