About the position

The Community Health Nurse at Bread for the City provides support for clinical and health education services, as well as performs a variety of administrative activities to support the functioning of the clinic. As a member of the Bread for the City team, the nurse is expected to be familiar with the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the organization and work collaboratively to achieve them.

Responsibilities

  • Provides support during clinic hours and assists patients with more complicated medical problems to navigate the healthcare system.
  • Works with providers to help with medical case management for patients with more complicated medical problems.
  • Oversees inventory of ordering and tracking immunizations, medications, lab supplies, and general clinic supplies.
  • Serves as vaccine coordinator in NW clinic, overseeing inventory, storage/handling, ordering, ensuring clinic is up-to-date with DC Department of Health vaccination programs.
  • Supervises Medical Assistants and assists in lab as needed, including performing phlebotomy, administering vaccines/medications, EKG, collecting and preparing lab specimens.
  • Oversees clinic's harm reduction services, including needle exchange program, vaccination/testing, and referrals to substance abuse treatment.
  • Assists with follow-up of patients after Emergency Department visits and hospital discharges.
  • Provides health teaching regarding blood pressure monitors, glucometers, insulin pens, and other medical devices.
  • Provides clinical support to front desk staff and the health resource room.
  • Works with the Chief Medical Officer to oversee credentialing and privileging of practitioners.
  • Develops, coordinates and participates in ongoing training for clinic staff on risk management and safety.
  • Coordinates safety activities, including annual medical equipment inspections.
  • Assists with HRSA compliance/site visit prep including FTCA deeming application.
  • Represents the organization in a variety of coalitions to support activities of public health.

Requirements

  • Strong desire to work with our patient population.
  • Licensed RN in Washington, DC.
  • Ability to work with volunteers and staff in a professional and collaborative manner.
  • Familiarity with Google Organization & Productivity Tools (Gmail, Google Docs, Calendar) and/or ability to learn new technology systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Candidates that speak other languages such as Spanish, Amharic, or Mandarin are preferred.
