About the position

The Community-Based Provider/Medical Assistant II, under general supervision, coordinates the planning, development, and implementation of assigned Project in the College of Nursing. This role involves clinical responsibilities such as measuring vital signs, interviewing patients, preparing them for tests, and performing basic procedures. The position also includes project coordination and communication tasks, working under the direction of healthcare providers to schedule appointments, compile data, and assist with patient registration in electronic health records.

Responsibilities

  • Measures vital signs such as blood pressure, temperature, pulse respiration and obtains height and weight.
  • Interviews patients for updated medical history and documents information in electronic medical records.
  • Prepares patients for tests, exams, and procedures and provides basic patient education.
  • Performs basic procedures including injections, vision screening, auditory exams, ear lavage, EKG, minor wound care, nebulizer treatments, throat swabs, fitting ortho slings, splints, and braces.
  • Assists and/or chaperones nurse practitioner during exams or procedures.
  • Transfers specimen and documents testing and lab results in medical records.
  • Serves as a liaison between patient and providers.
  • Prepares and administers injections and dispenses medication as directed by nurse practitioner.
  • Oversees and ensures the cleanliness of exam and treatment rooms.
  • Monitors and maintains supply and inventory of clinical supplies.
  • Accurately maintains daily activity logs regarding client activity and destinations.
  • Identifies and coordinates community resources.
  • Continuously expands knowledge and understanding of community resources and service programs.
  • Serves as a Driver for mobile clinics in a University vehicle.
  • Conduct community resource assessment.
  • Serves as the lead community-based provider assistant and is responsible for the delivery of patient care.
  • Serves as a mentor and assists supervisor with training and supervision of student workers.
  • Coordinates scheduling of patient follow-up appointments with available providers.
  • Provides verbal and/or written communication to patients and to providers.
  • Identifies and provides available resources to patients in their own communities.
  • Compiles data and creates reports.
  • Assists with registering patients in the electronic health record system.
  • Obtains medical records and laboratory results from providers.

Requirements

  • High School, GED or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3 years related medical experience.
  • Active Texas Driver's license or ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Able to provide and receive confidential information while maintaining a high level of confidentiality.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with individuals in rural or medically underserved communities.
  • Experience with scheduling patient appointments.
  • Experience with data collection and reports.
  • Enrollment requirements for Texas Medicaid and CHIP or willingness to learn.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish.
