About the position

The Communications Director and Website Manager is responsible for overseeing strategic, administrative, and management activities related to communications, branding, and public relations for Research, Scholarship and Creative Activities (RSCA) at Appalachian State University. This role involves developing and sustaining internal and external engagement programs to support the university's brand, collaborating with various stakeholders, and ensuring effective communication strategies are implemented. The position reports to the Public Relations Director and supports the Vice Provost of Research and Innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate within University Communications to develop, implement, and review university content strategy and communications goals.
  • Meet regularly with the college dean to plan communications work, provide updates, and receive feedback.
  • Participate in weekly meetings as part of the University Communications public relations team.
  • Utilize project management tools to track progress on work assignments.
  • Serve as the RSCA lead writer to conceptualize, research, write, and edit content for diverse audiences across multiple platforms.
  • Promote the achievements of RSCA's students, faculty, administration, and alumni through various media.
  • Advise on RSCA's strategic and integrated marketing and communication functions.
  • Ensure content is relevant, accurate, consistent, and engaging for all stakeholders.
  • Work with faculty and staff to review content and negotiate edits or changes.
  • Partner collaboratively with university personnel to manage and share content about RSCA.
  • Track analytics to support marketing and external engagement strategies.
  • Assist the Vice Provost for Research and Innovation with fundraising and development efforts.
  • Assist in outreach initiatives to cultivate relationships with external partners.
  • Develop and execute reports, presentations, and materials for high-level college officials.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Advertising, Design, Educational Media, or related professional experience.
  • Minimum of 7 years of professional experience in marketing or communications positions.
  • Broad knowledge of marketing, communications, and event management.
  • Familiarity working in highly collaborative, matrix environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong time-management and work prioritization skills.
  • Design skills such as Adobe Creative Cloud suite.
  • Social media management and potential marketing strategy development.
  • Basic skills with logistics, especially regarding event management and project timelines.
  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Advertising, Design, Educational Media, or related professional experience.
  • 10+ years of professional experience in marketing or communications positions.
  • Professional experience in content management and governance.
