This position is responsible for achieving profitable underwriting results in support of growth and profit objectives by appropriate risk selection, agency relations, book management, self-development, and assistance in professional development of others. The role involves selecting profitable risks by identifying and analyzing risk exposures against coverage desired, and managing and underwriting a book of business to maintain profitable results. It also includes monitoring new business production, renewal and policy retention trends, and agency production and loss ratio results within an assigned territory to ensure objectives are met. The position requires developing effective relationships with agents and other internal and external customers through effective communication, cooperation, and periodic agency visits, and driving new business sales growth for Commercial Lines. The underwriter will develop and maintain full knowledge of all policy forms, coverages, rating plans, and manuals for all property and casualty lines written, and assist in the training, mentoring, and development of new or less experienced underwriting personnel. The role also involves managing assigned work to meet or exceed time and quality service standards, reviewing referrals within guidelines and individual underwriting authority, and maintaining appropriate underwriting documentation. Agency management is a key component, including developing and managing the new business pipeline, analyzing quality, volume, mix of business, and profit for assigned producers, identifying trends in submission activity, executing actions to achieve policy retention and pricing objectives, participating in agency review processes, and supporting sales managers in training for agencies. The role is responsible for agency travel to increase producer awareness of underwriting appetites, philosophy, and product offerings. Embracing a culture of Continuous Improvement (CI) and actively identifying opportunities for improvement to increase efficiency and decrease waste is expected. The position also involves placing reinsurance, assisting less experienced underwriters with reinsurance quotes, and assisting with audits.
