About the position
The Collections Cataloger at Dayton History is responsible for creating and updating catalog records for historic objects and archival collections. This role involves working closely with the Collections Manager and Curator to ensure accurate documentation and maintenance of the museum's collection management system.
Responsibilities
- Creates original cataloging and updates existing catalog records, including condition reporting and photo documenting artifacts.
- Assists in the maintenance and operation of the museum's collection management system, including spot-check and full inventories of the various collections.
- Independently prepares written reports, evaluations, and status reports regarding the collection and specific artifacts.
- Generates reports from the computerized collections database (Past Perfect).
- Performs artifact care, maintenance, and re-housing as needed.
- Completes other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Master's degree in museum science, a graduate certificate in museum collections management, or other relevant graduate coursework is strongly preferred.
- Minimum one-year experience as a cataloger working/volunteering in a cultural institution, library, archive, or museum (an internship can provide this experience).
- Demonstrated experience in handling objects and archival materials.
Nice-to-haves
- Knowledge of digital files and digital asset management.
- Familiarity or experience with Past Perfect collections database software.
