About the position

Under the direction of the Manager of Coding Policy and Education, the position involves researching coding and documentation guidelines and creating or updating policies as needed. The role includes developing training materials for Brown University Health, working with the Manager to publish materials online, and updating them as necessary. The individual will perform audits on schedule or as assigned based on department policy, coding guidelines, payer rules, and/or system policies. They will identify external resources, assist with external audits, record results, and schedule related feedback sessions. Additionally, the position requires working with the manager to provide regularly scheduled education.

Responsibilities

  • Consistently apply the corporate values of respect, honesty, and fairness while pursuing excellence in improving health status.
  • Research coding and documentation guidelines from reliable sources and compile that information into a user-friendly manual.
  • Record various training materials for coders and providers and publish them on the Brown University Health Intranet.
  • Prepare for and conduct education sessions including specialty-specific coding and documentation guidelines.
  • Review findings from external audits and coordinate feedback sessions with coders, validators, and providers.
  • Track internal and external audits and maintain a detailed log.
  • Perform analysis of reports on key coding/auditing metrics and identify trends.
  • Stay updated on coding changes including ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes.
  • Create educational materials including lesson plans and audiovisual aids.
  • Monitor validators for violations of ethical coding standards and report concerns.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Participate in committees, task forces, and quality improvement teams as needed.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

Requirements

  • Associate degree or 3 years of experience in a medical coding/validating role.
  • Certification required: CCS, CPC, RHIA, or RHIT.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Technical proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams applications.
  • Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in outpatient coding.
  • High level of knowledge in ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding methodologies.
  • Experience with Epic preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Specialty certification or willingness to obtain specialty certification.
