About the position
The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is seeking a CO Nurse Practitioner to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team to optimize team performance and patient outcomes. The department is seeking an excellent clinician to provide clinical care to adults and pediatric patients at the Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center Campus. The CO Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing high quality and effective patient care through the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of acute and chronic mental illness. In addition to providing direct patient care, the Nurse Practitioner also educates patients and family members regarding mental illness. The Nurse Practitioner shares responsibility for the provision of excellent health care in compliance with state and federal accreditation requirements, and practices within the guidelines of the Department of Psychiatry, Johns Hopkins Medicine and in accordance with the Maryland Board of Nursing. The Nurse Practitioner is granted privileges by the Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center Medical Board; these privileges list specific tasks and are reviewed annually.
Responsibilities
- Rounding and medication management of patients needing a psychiatric evaluation and/or re-evaluation primarily in the adult and pediatric emergency departments and inpatient/observation settings when coverage is needed.
- Complete progress notes in EPIC and bill for services provided.
- Medication evaluation and management of psychiatric outpatients.
- Participate in on-call after hours rotation shared by Psychiatry providers, reachable by phone and/or pager, which includes one weeknight of call per week.
- Participate in weekend call (6 weekends per year), which includes coming into the hospital to round on all inpatients, completing consults requested by med/surg units, rounding in the ED, and taking calls for admissions and discharges from the social workers in the ED.
- Participate in Department of Psychiatry provider and staff meetings.
- Perform psychiatric assessment, formulate diagnosis, and in consultation with referring physician recommend and complete appropriate disposition.
- Provide requesting physician with results of assessment and disposition plan.
- Interview patient and perform psychosocial assessment, mental status examination and past psychiatric history.
- Contact family or any collateral informants necessary to provide information necessary to complete an assessment.
- Formulate an appropriate treatment/disposition plan for patient.
- Coordinate care for patients to achieve clinical and organizational outcomes.
- Use advanced clinical and theoretical knowledge to identify acute and/or chronic health problems through a comprehensive, age-appropriate assessment of patients using skills in taking medical histories, screening, physical examinations, ordering diagnostic tests, making tentative diagnoses, prescribing appropriate medications and treatments.
- Provide evidence-based care and provide patient education for self-care chronic disease management.
- Effectively use resources.
- Prioritize and organize work to meet the changing priorities of Howard County Medical Center.
- Provide guidance and direction to other staff where applicable to promote quality improvement/patient safety projects.
- Work collaboratively with medical and surgical consultants.
- Strive to meet and/or exceed established productivity targets for services provided.
- Complete notes within the EPIC electronic medical record system on the day of visit and discharge summaries on the day of discharge for effective communication with primary care providers, medical consultants and informal care providers.
- Accountable for own patient care decisions.
- Exercise administrative judgment and assume responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service within the functional area.
- Responsible for other clinical duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Master's Degree in Nursing.
- Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.
- Must be licensed as NP in the State of Maryland.
- Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.
- Completion of the Howard County Medical Center hospital credentialing process is required prior to start date.
- Additional experience may substitute for master’s degree.
Nice-to-haves
- Psychiatry experience preferred.
- Demonstrated competence in the delivery of health care to a diverse group of child and adolescent patients preferred.
- Two years related experience as a registered nurse preferred.
