About the position

The position involves assisting with the management of patient and athlete visits within the clinic, performing a range of clinical responsibilities in support of the physicians. The role includes participation in community outreach and conducting presentations on various Athletic Training topics. Additionally, the position supervises Student Athletic Trainers and/or Intern Athletic Trainers and mentors new staff members.

Responsibilities

  • Manage patient visits within the clinic for physicians.
  • Interact regularly with patients and others involved in the patient/athlete's care to ensure coordinated quality care.
  • Obtain initial patient history, vital signs, and follow-up status to present to the physician.
  • Request and organize ancillary studies (X-rays, MRI, CT scans, lab work) for physician review.
  • Prepare patients for physician arrival, injections, or other office procedures.
  • Perform post-operative dressing changes, staple or suture removal as directed by the physician.
  • Instruct patients on post-operative or post-injury wound care.
  • Conduct knee ligament laxity or other joint tests as directed by the physician.
  • Organize and disburse patient lab work or other office tests as directed.
  • Apply and remove casts, splints, etc. as directed by the physician.
  • Instruct patients on proper care of casts, splints, etc.
  • Provide discharge instructions for physical therapy, further studies, and follow-up appointments.
  • Teach, counsel, and communicate with patients, athletes, families, coaches, and others.
  • Support and provide educational material on injury management and prevention.
  • Participate in follow-up care for patients/athletes ready to return to play.
  • Provide information regarding follow-up services and referrals to other resources.
  • Comply with departmental policies for documentation.
  • Take office notes when directed by physicians.
  • Organize and disburse incoming medical records and reports.
  • Volunteer for community events and coordinate presentations on Athletic Training topics.
  • Supervise and delegate tasks to Student Athletic Trainers and/or Intern Athletic Trainers.
  • Maintain cleanliness and upkeep of exam rooms and departmental equipment.

Requirements

  • South Carolina DHEC Athletic Training Certificate.
  • National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATABOC).
