About the position

The Clinical Athletic Trainer for Orthopedics at the University of Virginia is responsible for providing athletic training services in a clinical or community setting, focusing on patient care under the guidance of physicians and in collaboration with the healthcare team. This role involves performing patient intakes, physical examinations, assisting with minor surgical procedures, and ensuring continuity of care through effective decision-making and communication with patients and healthcare professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Perform patient intake for various medical and musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Conduct physical examinations based on patient history and chief complaints.
  • Assist physicians with minor surgical procedures, including patient preparation and medication management.
  • Provide post-operative wound care and education, including dressing changes and suture removal.
  • Collaborate with supervising physicians to develop treatment plans.
  • Utilize best practices for concussion evaluation and management.
  • Execute Protocol Orders and review diagnostic studies under physician direction.
  • Document evaluations, testing, and supply usage in the Electronic Health Record.
  • Exhibit knowledge of athletic training domains including injury prevention, clinical evaluation, and rehabilitation.
  • Demonstrate autonomy while collaborating with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Ensure continuity of care and positive patient outcomes through decision-making.
  • Identify and revise protocols for orthopedic patients and department practices.
  • Implement clinic initiatives for patient safety and staff development.
  • Support onboarding of new team members and provide preceptorship as needed.
  • Attend educational in-services and maintain compliance with continuing education requirements.
  • Participate in professional activities to stay updated on trends and practices.
  • Engage in community outreach events as required by the program manager.
  • Maintain compliance with infection control policies and HIPAA guidelines.
  • Monitor physician schedules to ensure seamless patient flow during clinic hours.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in athletic training or exercise physiology; Master's degree required if earned after 2015.
  • 1 year of related experience or training.
  • Certified Athletic Trainer certification from the Board of Certification.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification.
