About the position

The Patient Care Associate will assist in providing care to patients that meets their individual needs in all patient settings. This role involves acting as a resource to patients, families, and visitors, providing superior customer service, and coordinating patient communication. The associate will maintain medical records, assist with patient admissions and discharges, and support nursing staff in various tasks. The position requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a resource to patients, families, and visitors upon entering the unit.
  • Assists in coordinating patient communication by answering call lights and relaying information to nursing staff.
  • Exhibits strong communication skills with professional telephone manners.
  • Functions as a liaison between the patient care unit and all support services throughout the hospital.
  • Maintains the flow of medical record information, ensuring all pertinent information is filed correctly.
  • Maintains established stock levels of clerical supplies.
  • Participates in the orientation of new staff.
  • Responds to staffing needs of the healthcare team by cross-training and floating to other units as needed.
  • Prints proxy list daily and updates proxy information to the current chart.
  • Performs unit-specific tasks as identified on the unit checklist.
  • Follows discharge procedures according to the checklist.
  • Attends the annual Safety Education Fair.
  • Demonstrates skills and judgment necessary to provide direct care to patients under supervision.
  • Assists with patient admissions to the PACU and prepares the recovery room.
  • Takes patients' vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, oxygen saturation, and temperature.
  • Assists with patient positioning and comfort measures.
  • Ambulates patients and assists with ADLs including toileting, dressing, and feeding.
  • Assists the nurse in conducting post-operative assessments.
  • Provides support to patients and their families during the recovery process.
  • Assists with patient transfers to other units or discharge from the PACU.
  • Maintains a clean and safe environment in the PACU.
  • Collaborates with the nursing team to ensure efficient and effective patient care.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Previous clerical experience (preferably in a healthcare setting).
  • Ability to read and write at level 8.
  • Ability to set appropriate priorities and organize workflow.
  • Ability to concentrate and pay attention to detail during frequent interruptions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Medical terminology knowledge.
  • Experience in a busy, heavily trafficked patient-care environment.
