About the position

This role requires at least 4 days onsite per week. The ideal claims team member will be an analytical and creative problem solver with the ability to hone in on key issues for coverage, liability and damage evaluation. Our claim examiners are assertive decision makers with a strong desire to persuade through negotiation and conflict management. The claims team offers ongoing challenges, even for the most experienced professional, as every claim is unique, providing new opportunities to learn and grow. We welcome our ongoing interaction with underwriting, compliance and actuarial to keep our products healthy.

Responsibilities

  • Confirm coverage by reviewing the first notice of loss, checking all available systems, and interpreting policy language.
  • Prepare initial position letters to the policyholder such as disclaimers and reservation of rights after coverage analysis.
  • Conduct a thorough and focused investigation of the claim once coverage is confirmed.
  • Secure all pertinent facts, statements & documents, identify joint tortfeasors and witnesses, and conduct scene investigation.
  • Post, review, and maintain initial reserves as the file develops to reflect ultimate exposure based upon liability and damage evaluation.
  • Manage the file proactively toward final disposition via an effective diary, direction to defense counsel & independent adjusters, and analysis & strategy leading to negotiated settlement or trial.
  • Document substantive file activity in claim notes.
  • Deliver comprehensive and concise authority requests, reinsurance reports, serious loss reports, coverage position letters, and communicate appropriately with underwriting and actuary.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of relevant experience handling general liability/casualty/excess matters for Associate Claim Examiner or 7+ years for Claim Examiner.
  • Experience as an examiner, adjuster, paralegal, or other transferable experience.
  • Technical knowledge of insurance coverage, negligence law, and claim evaluation.

  • Personal lines experience.
  • Multi-jurisdictional knowledge.
  • Advanced degrees and/or JD.
