About the position

The Civil Engineer 1 position at Metra involves performing entry-level professional engineering duties related to the construction, repair, and maintenance of bridges, retaining walls, and other infrastructure assets. The role includes conducting inspections, preparing reports, maintaining inventory records, and coordinating construction projects to ensure safety and compliance with engineering standards.

Responsibilities

• Conduct bridge inspections to assess condition and determine needed repairs.
• Prepare reports of findings and recommendations based on inspections.
• Maintain inventory records of materials for bridge maintenance.
• Prioritize capital projects and maintain loading capacity calculations for all bridges.
• Prepare plans, cost estimates, and schedules for repair projects.
• Procure materials and provide technical support to in-house repair crews and outside contractors.
• Conduct Engineering Asset Management and Facility Condition Assessment inspections.
• Document findings and identify repair/replacement priorities for retaining walls.
• Promote safe work practices and maintain a safe work environment.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited school.
• Working knowledge of civil engineering design and construction principles, methods, and standards.
• Familiarity with materials, techniques, and components used in infrastructure construction, maintenance, and repair.
• Good organizational, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficient in computer-aided design and drafting system applications (CADD) and Microsoft Office 365, especially Word and Excel.
• Intermediate skill in database systems applications.
• Ability to read engineering drawings and interpret engineering specifications for bridges and buildings.
• Ability to conduct detailed bridge inspections and work independently.
• Good judgment in decision making.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and be willing to travel within Metra's 6-county region.
