About the position

The Child Care Inspector position within the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene involves conducting inspections of childcare programs to ensure compliance with health codes and regulations. The role is crucial for safeguarding the health and safety of children in childcare environments and includes responsibilities such as monitoring, reporting, and enforcing regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct periodic inspections of childcare programs, including visual inspections, document reviews, field testing, and sample collection.
  • Prepare detailed reports using a handheld tablet to document inspection findings accurately and timely.
  • Review findings with childcare operators and provide guidance on regulatory compliance and necessary remedial measures.
  • Issue court summonses and hearing notices, and may close establishments in cases of imminent danger.
  • Evaluate site viability for applications for permits to open childcare programs under NYC Health Code and NYS Regulations.
  • Conduct data collection and reporting activities for routine operations and special studies.
  • Attend and testify at administrative hearings as a representative of the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
  • Travel throughout New York City using mass transit or personal vehicle, carrying approximately 15 pounds of inspection equipment.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with 30 semester credits in physical and/or biological sciences, or an associate degree with 15 semester credits and 5 years of experience as a public health technician.
  • Medical guidelines must be met to perform essential functions of the position.
