About the position

The Chief of Pediatric & Congenital Cardiac Surgery at the University of Miami is responsible for leading the pediatric cardiology service line, performing a wide range of surgical procedures for congenital heart defects, and overseeing the quality and effectiveness of the program. This role involves collaboration with various departments to ensure high standards of care, recruitment and development of staff, and participation in research and educational activities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform the complete scope of surgical services for congenital heart problems in newborns, infants, children, and adolescents.
  • Lead the pediatric cardiology service line associated with the Children's Heart Center at Holtz Children's and Women's Hospital.
  • Establish and maintain quality standards and procedures for pediatric cardiac surgery and heart transplant.
  • Collaborate with hospital leadership to meet accreditation criteria for the cardiac surgery program and neonatal intensive care unit.
  • Implement clinical effectiveness programs and clinical pathways as needed.
  • Oversee outcomes, quality, and patient experience for the pediatric cardiovascular surgery program.
  • Recruit, retain, and develop faculty and staff for the program.
  • Coordinate scheduling services for physicians to ensure coverage.
  • Perform daily unit rounds on all assigned inpatients and provide outpatient professional medical services.
  • Collaborate with other physicians and hospital personnel to optimize patient care and resource use.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and quality initiatives for the program.
  • Implement teaching activities related to residents and fellows in the program.
  • Conduct programmatic research on childhood heart disease and collaborate with colleagues in adult congenital heart disease.
  • Ensure professional medical services are available 24/7 for all inpatients/outpatients in the program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in pre-medicine or related field.
  • M.D. degree with completion of a fellowship in pediatric cardiac surgery.
  • Florida Medical License required.
  • American Board of Thoracic Surgery, Congenital Heart Surgery Subspecialty Certification (or eligible) required.
  • 8-10 years of work-related experience in pediatric cardiac surgery.

  • Fluency in Spanish and/or Creole is greatly valued.
