About The Position

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) role at Atrium Health High Point Medical Center is a full-time position responsible for strategic planning, medical staff coordination, value-based care initiatives, physician recruitment and development, administrative functions, performance improvement, capacity management, regulatory compliance, human resources management, community and physician relationships, and budget management. This leadership position serves as a crucial liaison between the Medical Staff and Management, ensuring high-quality clinical care delivery and operational efficiency.

Requirements

  • Medicine and/or Surgery, MD-DO license issued by the state in which the team member practices.
  • Doctorate Degree in Medicine
  • Typically, the role requires 10 years of experience in a clinical field as a practicing physician.
  • 5 years of management experience in directing medical operations, performance improvement, and quality programs.
  • Demonstrated excellence in clinical care and superior performance in physician leadership roles, including quality and utilization management, clinical effectiveness and outcomes, clinical staff development, case management, and clinical protocol development.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of current trends in healthcare delivery, including the development of alternative delivery systems, care management, clinical risk management, managed care, physician practice models, physician payment issues, fiscal management, and access to healthcare.
  • Dynamic knowledge of outcomes measurement, clinical quality, and utilization. Experience with and commitment to continuous performance and quality improvement methodology.
  • Demonstrated success in developing positive physician relationships and collaborations with internal and external partners.
  • Advanced knowledge of and skills in developing, planning, and implementing long-term strategies and plans.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to successfully interact with physicians and employees at all levels throughout the organization and within the community.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite or Comparable Products.
  • Advanced knowledge of computer applications and database management in a clinical setting.
  • Excellent skills in problem-solving, conflict resolution, negotiation, and diplomacy.

Responsibilities

  • Participating in strategic planning for the medical center and assisting in matters related to the Medical Staff and Clinical Care Delivery Systems.
  • Representing Medical Staff interests to Management and serving as a liaison between the two.
  • Coordinating and providing staffing for Medical Staff committee activities, serving as a resource, and providing appropriate leadership and guidance.
  • Collaborating closely with the Medical Staff President, other elected Medical Staff officers, department, and committee chairperson.
  • Championing value-based care by participating in the development and execution of value-based care strategies, monitoring and influencing risk contract performance, and fostering an environment conducive to value-based care.
  • Overseeing physician productivity and practice efficiency, guiding the implementation of enhancements, and ensuring the efficacy of the local physician recruitment process.
  • Coordinating administrative functions for medical staff, including employment agreements, regulatory compliance, care management initiatives, physician performance reviews, peer review, privileging, and credentialing.
  • Directing a medical center-wide Performance Improvement Program, establishing standards of performance, monitoring mechanisms, and outcomes tracking for appropriate medical center departments and the Medical Staff.
  • Guiding and directing the activities of the medical center's Performance Improvement Teams.
  • Providing leadership for capacity management initiatives to improve patient flow and support optimal patient care.
  • Ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, and managing risk through quality improvement and infection control plans.
  • Responsibilities related to human resources, including interviewing, selecting new employees, staff development, performance evaluations, compensation changes, resolution of employee concerns, corrective actions, terminations, and overall employee morale.
  • Developing relationships with medical centers and community physicians to support strategic initiatives and fostering a close, mutually beneficial relationship between the Medical Staff and the medical center.
  • Developing and recommending operating and capital budgets and controlling expenditures within approved budget objectives.
