About the position

The Charge Nurse in the Operating Room at Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital is responsible for overseeing the nursing needs of patients in the peri-operative setting. This role requires a blend of clinical expertise, leadership, and effective communication to ensure high-quality patient care and efficient operation of the surgical department. The Charge Nurse will facilitate daily operations, manage clinical staff, and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Accountable for meeting the complete nursing needs of a defined group of patients using the nursing process and medical plan of care.
  • Facilitates the daily schedule in the Operating Room, accommodating patient care needs.
  • Serves as a clinical and professional role model, fostering growth and development opportunities for staff.
  • Monitors daily job performance of clinical staff members and surgeons.
  • Effectively manages resources using a multidisciplinary approach.
  • Plans, directs, implements, and improves clinical services.
  • Ensures appropriate clinical personnel are available based on surgical volumes and schedules.
  • Makes daily assignments considering qualifications and competencies of available personnel.
  • Communicates variances in the surgical schedule to the perioperative team.
  • Ensures all clinical personnel have breaks consistent with labor laws.
  • Demonstrates professional communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Collaborates with other departments for resource allocation each shift.
  • Utilizes data to identify patient care needs and communicates specifications across the perioperative care team.
  • Participates in the evaluation process and development of policies and procedures.
  • Participates in departmental and hospital-wide committees.
  • Assists the Department Director in achieving and maintaining CAH standards.
  • Audits charts for appropriate documentation and reviews patient history for surgical concerns.
  • Assumes responsibility for own professional development and practice.
  • Develops professional goals to maintain and expand clinical and managerial competency.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies, promoting workplace safety.
  • Promotes a safe environment for patients and staff, taking appropriate actions as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing, BSN or MSN required or currently enrolled in an accredited program.
  • Current New Hampshire Nursing license.
  • Practicing OR Registered Nurse with at least 5 years' experience in the Peri-Operative setting.
  • Current BCLS certification required upon hire.
  • Current ACLS certification required within 90 days of hire.
  • Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) credential preferred.
  • Active member of Association of Perioperative Nurses (AORN).
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills and the ability to organize and prioritize job functions.
