About the position

The primary function of the school nurse is to service the health needs of the school site, relative to both personal attention and in-service trainings. The school nurse is responsible for the administration of the School Health Program, student health assessments, delivery of first aid, and the formulation of policies and standards for the school health program. The nurse also plays a role in health education, counseling, and guidance, as well as health protection and safety. Additionally, the nurse is involved in the special education process, ensuring compliance with state mandates and communicating health needs effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures that all actions are in concert with the Board policies and the mission statement.
  • Carries out additional duties as required.
  • Participates in job training and professional growth opportunities.
  • Administers the School Health Program.
  • Responsible for student health assessments and delivery of first aid.
  • Participates in the formulation of policies, standards, and objectives of the school health program.
  • Assists in planning the school health budget.
  • Compiles monthly and annual records, reports, and statistical information.
  • Informs school personnel about health concerns and resources.
  • Plans with school administrator regarding health policies and procedures.
  • Works with advisory groups on the school health program.
  • Responsible for the prevention, promotion, and education of health needs/concerns of students.
  • Administers medication in compliance with state and board policies.
  • Performs special procedures as ordered by a physician.
  • Participates in faculty meetings and health service staff meetings.
  • Serves as a resource person in health for teachers and other personnel.
  • Interprets health and social needs to school and community groups.
  • Communicates with parents and makes referrals to outside health care agencies.
  • Conducts or participates in epidemiological investigations.
  • Maintains a daily log of student visits to the health office.
  • Assumes responsibility for screening procedures.
  • Consults with parents regarding the health of their children.
  • Encourages attitudes that promote growth and development.
  • Utilizes health services for teaching students about health.
  • Participates in formulating policies for the care of ill or injured pupils.
  • Observes the school environment for safety hazards.
  • Identifies students eligible for Special Education Services.
  • Completes necessary paperwork for the Special Education process.

Requirements

  • Must be a professional registered nurse within the State of Illinois.
  • Meet the requirements for school nurse as defined by the Illinois Board of Education (Type 73 Certificate with School Nurse Endorsement).
  • Current Illinois Department of Public Health Vision and Hearing Screening Certification.
  • Willingness to become CPR Instructor for AHA.
