About The Position

The Peer Specialist is an individual with lived experience in mental health and/or substance use recovery who provides trauma‑informed peer support to individuals receiving behavioral health services. This role uses personal recovery experience to foster hope, empowerment, and self‑determination while supporting clients in achieving their personal, wellness, and community‑based life goals. The Peer Specialist is an active member of an interdisciplinary team and serves as an advocate, educator, and recovery role model.

Requirements

  • Lived experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery
  • High School Diploma or GED (preferred)
  • CPR and First Aid certification
  • Strong communication, writing, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals with mental health, substance use, and co‑occurring disorders
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries and ethical relationships
  • Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills
  • Valid driver’s license with a minimum of three (3) years of continuous driving experience and a good driving record
  • Ability to use computers and basic software applications (MS Office, electronic medical records)
  • Ability to meet physical demands of the role, including driving, standing, lifting, and movement within the community

  • Experience facilitating groups or providing peer education

Responsibilities

  • Provide peer support grounded in lived experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery
  • Engage clients through outreach, relationship‑building, and ongoing recovery support
  • Share personal recovery experiences to promote hope, empowerment, and self‑advocacy
  • Assist clients in developing coping skills, wellness plans, and recovery goals
  • Support clients in preparing for treatment planning and recovery meetings
  • Facilitate peer recovery support groups and training sessions
  • Advocate for clients to access services, benefits, housing, and community resources
  • Assist clients in building natural supports, employment goals, hobbies, and community connections
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and provide insight into the client perspective
  • Provide transportation and on‑call crisis support as scheduled
  • Maintain accurate documentation, client records, and reports in accordance with agency standards
  • Comply with confidentiality, ethical boundaries, and applicable federal and state regulations
  • Participate in required trainings, continuing education, and quality improvement activities
