About the position

Pioneer Human Services is seeking a part-time Certified Peer Specialist who is passionate about human services and wants to make a difference in the community. This role involves providing client advocacy and support under the supervision of a mental health professional or a Substance Use Disorder Professional (SUDP). The Certified Peer Specialist will utilize their personal life experiences and training to offer hope and encouragement to individuals receiving behavioral health services, promoting personal responsibility for recovery. The position is part of an organization dedicated to racial justice, second opportunities, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and has a long history of empowering justice-involved individuals to overcome adversity and reach their full potential.

Responsibilities

  • Assist clients to obtain community services including healthcare, social services, housing, and employment training.
  • Support clients' pursuit of recovery activities.
  • Utilize life experiences to provide hope and encouragement for recovery.
  • Support clinical and/or residential staff in the provision of clinical services.
  • Advocate for client needs and act as a role model for clients.
  • Practice strong boundaries appropriate in the peer role.
  • Report incidents impacting clients to the supervisor on duty.
  • Assist with intakes and discharges of clients as applicable.
  • Responsible for food prep and food service for clients as applicable.
  • Responsible for cleaning food service equipment and dining area as applicable.
  • Retrieve, remove, and store clients' linens and clothing as applicable.
  • Assist clients in meeting health and hygiene needs by retrieving hygiene products when requested.
  • Perform cleaning duties such as sweeping, wiping down tables, and taking out garbage as applicable.
  • Oversee clients' smoke breaks as applicable.
  • Maintain quality of care consistent with State of Washington regulations and accrediting bodies.
  • Adhere to professional and ethical standards of the program and DOH.
  • Provide professionally written documentation and correspondence.
  • Engage in clear communication with clients, staff, and community members.
  • Promote teamwork and collaboration with co-workers.
  • Participate in supervision and agency meetings.
  • Obtain required training and participate in staff meetings.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Proof of Certified Peer Counselor Certification.
  • Self-identify as a person with lived experience with mental health or substance use services or be a parent/legal guardian of a child with such experience.
  • Be 18 years or older.
  • Be in recovery from mental health or substance use disorder for at least one year.
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities and proficiency in reading comprehension and writing skills.
  • Willingness to share personal recovery story.
  • Must obtain Agency Affiliated Counselor certification within 60 days of hire.
  • Valid food handlers card within one week of hire.

Nice-to-haves

  • A.A./B.A./B.S. degree in a health or human services field.
