About the position

The Certified Ophthalmology Assistant at Summit Health plays a crucial role in providing high-quality eye care services. This position involves performing various ophthalmic tests, assisting ophthalmologists in procedures, and ensuring a smooth patient experience through effective communication and organizational skills. The role is integral to the patient care team, contributing to the overall mission of delivering connected and compassionate healthcare.

Responsibilities

  • Performing visual acuity screenings
  • Taking ocular measurements, both anatomical and functional
  • Performing a variety of ophthalmic testing
  • Gathering cataract measurements
  • Administering or preparing ocular medications
  • Conducting refractometry for glasses prescriptions using the auto refractor
  • Providing eye care and contact lens information to patients
  • Maintaining and cleaning ophthalmic instruments
  • Assisting the ophthalmologist in basic procedures
  • Obtaining prior authorizations for in-office and ambulatory surgical procedures
  • Scheduling appointments and clarifying pre-op and post-op instructions with patients
  • Processing pharmacy requests, patient phone calls, and provider messages appropriately
  • Stocking and maintaining examination rooms
  • Performing retinal photographs utilizing a Digital Retinal Camera
  • Performing clinical skills following procedural guidelines
  • Adhering to infection control safety and OSHA guidelines

Requirements

  • COA (Certified Ophthalmic Assistant) Certification required
  • Minimum 1 year of prior Ophthalmology experience required
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Empathetic personality with attention to patient's needs and concerns
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Flexibility to travel to other sites when needed
  • Computer literacy and fast learner
