About the position

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) role involves providing personal care, comfort, and safety for residents in a nursing home setting. The position requires assisting residents with daily living activities and observing any changes in their condition. The CNA works under the direct supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse and is responsible for various tasks that ensure the well-being of the residents.

Responsibilities

  • Answer all call lights/bells and resident requests in a timely manner.
  • Bathed, shaved, shampooed, combed hair, dressed, provided mouth care and nail care for residents requiring assistance.
  • Gave massage, and applied emollients, lotions, and ointments to areas requiring treatment.
  • Served meals and nourishment to residents and assisted those requiring help.
  • Provided appropriate fluids at intervals throughout the day.
  • Provided perineal, colostomy, and catheter care and application of briefs.
  • Administered bedpans, urinal, and enemas as required.
  • Took and recorded blood pressure, temperature, pulse, weight, respiration rate, and oxygen saturation level.
  • Measured and recorded food and liquid intake and output.
  • Maintained record of care and observations, resident care profiles, and ADLs.
  • Reported orally any deviation in resident's condition to charge nurse, and documented pertinent resident information using electronic information system.
  • Attended and participated in case conferences when on duty, for residents in his/her care.
  • Observed and noted condition of skin, hair, nails, and mouth.
  • Observed color, odor, and character of output.
  • Assisted in the collection of specimens.
  • Performed passive and active range of motion exercises.
  • Transferred residents to and from bed or chair, and positioned the resident in proper body alignment and documented on resident's record.
  • Escorted residents to activities and appointments using techniques appropriate to their condition.
  • Participated in socialization activities and activities of residents on the unit.
  • Notified charge nurse regarding need for equipment repair or replacement.
  • Properly used and cared for equipment and supplies.
  • Maintained cleanliness and neatness of resident's room and equipment.
  • Provided clean linen and clothing and removed soiled linen and clothing.
  • Participated in infection control programs by using proper hand washing techniques, avoiding cross contamination, and using proper isolation techniques as required.
  • Reported incidents and accidents to charge nurse.
  • Recognized special needs of the elderly regarding age-related changes and altered care appropriately.
  • Assisted in orienting residents to the facility environment and routines upon admission and as needed throughout their stay.
  • May restrain residents using proper methods as required.
  • Worked with the staffing coordinator by consistently and continuously reviewing posted work schedules to verify accuracy and to ensure awareness of the need for additional coverage.

Requirements

  • Possession of a New York State certificate of completion of Nurse Aide Training Course.
  • Medical Exam.
  • Reference Check.
