About the position

The Sterile Processing Technician plays a crucial role in supporting the daily operations of operating rooms and various other units within the hospital. This position is responsible for the proper handling of surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment, ensuring they are decontaminated, assembled, inspected, packaged, sterilized, stored, and distributed in a safe and timely manner. The technician will also interact with patients and staff, providing compassionate care and support as part of an interprofessional team.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
  • Recognize and respect patients' personal preferences, priorities, needs, and cultural beliefs.
  • Communicate with and support the interprofessional team, patients, families, and designated care partners.
  • Disassemble, clean, inspect, prepare, assemble, sterilize, and dispense surgical and procedure instrumentation and trays for various departments.
  • Prepare procedural case carts per campus requirements.
  • Operate automated washers, cart washers, ultrasonic washers, and sterilizers safely and efficiently.
  • Examine and test instruments to ensure proper integrity, function, and cleanliness before sterilization.
  • Ensure verification of pre and post sterilization quality indicators.
  • Report any issues with sterilization equipment to appropriate SPD leadership.
  • Use Instrument Tracking System to maintain inventory levels and accurate documentation of surgical trays and items.
  • Accurately label each item with name and/or expiration date.
  • Check for outdates and package integrity of sterilized items; replace or report as necessary.
  • Maintain, assemble, and distribute durable medical equipment as required.
  • Perform off shift and holiday call coverage as needed.
  • Participate in the onboarding process of new team members.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Graduate of a certified sterile processing technician training program.
