About the position

The Nursing Assistant provides direct and indirect patient care within any clinical area under the supervision of a licensed nurse. This role includes one-on-one observation of selected patients to maintain patient safety. The position is PRN (as needed) and operates during the hours of Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM, with hours varying based on patient census.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct and indirect patient care at Infusion Therapy Services under the supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Facilitate evaluation, treatment, and final disposition of the patient by assisting the nurse assigned to the direct care of the patient.
  • Responsible for clerical duties of the department as well as maintaining patient records and supplies.
  • Assist with admitting new patients or reassessing previously admitted patients to promote optimal flow through the department's health care delivery system.
  • Assist with the plan of care for each patient.
  • Assist with the maintenance of quality care.
  • Assist with the collection of specimens and transport in accordance with universal precautions.
  • Set up/room patients for treatments.
  • Assist the patient to their assigned room and help with undressing and gowning as needed.
  • Take and document vital signs.
  • May provide basic first aid under the supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Stock and maintain supplies in the patient care area.
  • Assist with cleaning the patient treatment area and rooms after patients are discharged.
  • Demonstrate competency in age-specific criteria as applicable to job scope.
  • Maintain established levels of inventory.
  • Answer the telephone and utilize established phone courtesy.
  • Answer the nurse call system and utilize the computer and fax machine correctly.
  • Notify appropriate departments of physician orders and uphold interdepartmental relations.
  • Organize and preserve the patient's electronic medical record as applicable to role.
  • Facilitate clear communication between the waiting area, assessment area/triage area, and the patient's assigned nurse.
  • Obtain and document vital signs in the electronic medical record.
  • Communicate vital sign information with the nurse.
  • May utilize/assist with the application and removal of non-invasive monitoring equipment.
  • Participate in educational programs and attend in-service programs as provided.
  • Maintain satisfactory communications and demonstrate clear and accurate lines of communication.
  • Maintain an employment record in accordance with Hospital policies.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Hospital safety and report unsafe conditions and incidents.
  • Responsible for the safety of others, company funds or property, and confidential information.
  • Adhere to universal precautions and wear appropriate PPE.

Requirements

  • Specialized or technical education required.
  • Certification as a Nursing Assistant in the state of Louisiana.
  • Good mental health to work effectively with patients, families, physicians, and other personnel.
  • Good physical health, capable of standing on feet for long periods of time, moving and lifting patients.
  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency in required skills as per the checklist maintained by the unit director/manager.
