About The Position

These positions perform work as a first line of defense in alleviating the abuse/neglect/exploitation of children and vulnerable adults within the state. These positions receive and professionally assess telephone calls and conduct thorough interviews dealing with possible mistreatment, neglect, and potential abuse. These positions are the initial contact point for possible abuse victims and act as an advisor to the resolution of client issues. They participate in a 24-hour on-call rotation and mandatory overtime to ensure continuous coverage. These positions communicate/coordinate with law enforcement if there is an emergency situation. Perform related work as required. The Bureau for Social Services champions the security, permanence, and welfare of children and vulnerable adults, empowering individuals and strengthening families. Formerly the Bureau for Children and Families, the Bureau for Social Services operates under the West Virginia Department of Human Services, serving children, adolescents, and vulnerable adults facing abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation. Equipped with extensive training to handle delicate situations with compassion and dignity, these workers contribute to the advancement of a vibrant and healthy West Virginia by facilitating access to crucial healthcare, essential social services and benefits, and fostering safe, supportive, and healthy environments. Through this hard work, at risk populations can begin to thrive within the community.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid WV driver’s license
  • Reliable transportation
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Maintain detailed case records and extensive documentation.
  • Successful completion of a background check is required for employment.
  • Applicants hired into this classification must obtain licensure as a Social Worker from the West Virginia Board of Social Work within a timeframe established by the appointing agency. Until licensure is obtained, they may not perform duties that require a licensed social worker under state law or Board regulation.

Responsibilities

  • Answering and assessing incoming calls regarding possible cases of mistreatment, neglect and abuse of children and at-risk adults statewide.
  • Communicate with Child and Adult Protective Service Workers and their supervisors when situations deem necessary.
  • Communicate with law enforcement personnel when citations deem necessary.
  • Prepare necessary reports and records to reflect the employee’s daily activities.
