About the position

The American Bar Association (ABA) is seeking an International Legal Advisor to conduct substantive international human rights legal and policy analysis in support of a grant-funded program. This position is integral to the ABA's mission of advancing the rule of law and ensuring access to justice for all. The role involves conducting research, professional writing, and engaging in public events and working groups focused on international human rights law and policy. The International Legal Advisor will analyze laws, regulations, court rules, and policy proposals, preparing memoranda, speeches, and articles for publication on relevant topics. In addition to research and writing, the advisor will support Legal Advisors 2 or 3 in implementing program activities aimed at increasing adherence to international human rights law and addressing impunity for human rights abuses. The role may also involve supervising interns or externs and providing technical assistance to government officials, civil society, and other stakeholders committed to promoting and protecting human rights. Coordination with local partners and program staff on grant reporting requirements and logistics is also a key responsibility. The advisor will conduct legal and factual research and contribute to report writing on matters of international human rights law and policy, performing other related duties as required.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct substantive international human rights legal and policy analysis in support of a grant-funded program.

  • Support Legal Advisor 2 or 3 in implementing program activities to increase adherence to international human rights law.
  • Assist with supervision of interns/externs as needed.
  • Provide technical assistance to government officials, civil society, and other stakeholders promoting human rights.
  • Coordinate with local partners on the provision of technical assistance.
  • Coordinate with program staff on grant reporting requirements and logistics.
  • Conduct legal and factual research and contribute to report writing on international human rights law and policy.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Possession of a Doctorate degree (JD or PhD).
  • Outstanding international human rights law and/or policy research and writing skills.
  • Excellent communication and organization skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Cumulative two years of previous legal work or volunteer experience related to international human rights law, policy, and/or development.
