About the position

The Catastrophe Modeling Analyst will play a crucial role in UFG's primary and reinsurance team by preparing and analyzing catastrophe modeling data. This position focuses on assessing risks associated with various natural disasters and supporting underwriters and actuaries in making informed portfolio management and pricing decisions. The role involves collaboration with data engineers and underwriters to ensure data accuracy and completeness, as well as utilizing catastrophe models like RMS to generate analytical reports and insights.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with data engineers and underwriters to gather necessary data for catastrophe modeling and improve data accuracy.
  • Organize, scrub, and prepare data for model-ready import files using SQL and Excel.
  • Work with underwriters and broker companies to gather data for the Alternative Distribution (Reinsurance) sector.
  • Support underwriting and actuarial teams by interpreting modeling outputs and pricing reinsurance contracts.
  • Prepare analytical reports on reinsurance contracts for underwriters.
  • Engage in diverse tasks including model validation and streamlining pricing workflows through automation.
  • Analyze risks for data quality, accuracy, and completeness.
  • Run analyses using proprietary catastrophe models like RMS and generate outputs to analyze loss results.
  • Support improvement efforts to increase consistency, efficiency, and compliance with internal standards.
  • Stay updated with changes in the catastrophe modeling industry and models.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics, Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or related field preferred.
  • Minor concentration or additional degree in Meteorology preferred.
  • 3+ years of catastrophe modeling experience including working with large data sets.
  • Proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint, SQL, and Tableau.
  • Strong analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure during event responses.

Nice-to-haves

  • Possess or working towards an ARe certification.
