About the position

The Cardiac Sonographer 2 is responsible for performing a range of cardiac ultrasound services and procedures for adult patients, including transthoracic, transesophageal, and stress echocardiograms. This role involves preparing patients, operating ultrasound equipment, analyzing clinical histories, and ensuring high-quality diagnostic results to assist in the diagnosis and assessment of cardiac abnormalities.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for procedures and obtain clinical history including cardiac-related physical findings and pertinent laboratory data.
  • Perform basic to advanced cardiac ultrasound procedures utilizing various equipment and techniques, ensuring accurate measurements for interpretation.
  • Identify and define cardiac abnormalities, extending the examination scope as necessary and correlating test results with cardiac anatomy and function.
  • Assist physicians in procedure and operating rooms by performing echocardiograph studies to aid in complex procedures.
  • Assist in performing transesophageal studies with cardiologists, calculating appropriate measurements and sterilizing probes.
  • Record statistics and perform daily maintenance of the Echocardiography Lab and its equipment, reporting malfunctions as appropriate.
  • Act as a resource to staff, physicians, and students regarding equipment, techniques, procedures, and studies to optimize patient care.
  • Work closely with the cardiac sonographer quality coordinator to ensure adherence to quality processes and assist with ICAEL accreditation activities.
  • Implement protocols as new technology evolves and ensure adherence to echocardiography standards.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited program or 2 years of work experience above the minimum qualification.
  • Less than 1 year of experience in a related field.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire or transfer.
  • Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) or Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) certification at the time of hire/transfer.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology.
  • Ability to explain the purpose of echocardiographic examinations to patients and answer their questions.
  • Knowledge of approved clinical protocols for cardiovascular ultrasound examinations.
  • Knowledge of proper infection control procedures and relevant laws regarding patient confidentiality.
