About The Position

The Captain directs the patrol, training, and other department supervisors in their daily duties and responsibilities while providing overall direction to various divisions of the department. This role also performs administrative duties, including supervising facility operations, equipment control, managing personnel, creating and enforcing policies and procedures, and reviewing paperwork. The Captain will perform all duties and responsibilities of a sworn University Law Enforcement Officer and direct the operations for special events and dignitary protection details. Additionally, the Captain acts as a liaison between the department and the University community, as well as the government and the surrounding community. The position involves participating in strategic planning for departmental in-service, advanced training needs, and University or police department events. The Captain also plans and coordinates equipment maintenance as well as departmental vehicle fleet maintenance, and makes recommendations for new equipment and new vehicle purchases.

Requirements

  • Requires a High School Diploma.
  • Requires a minimum of two years of prior leadership and management experience at the rank of sergeant or similar first line supervisor.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead personnel and manage programs or initiatives required.
  • Significant knowledge of laws and law enforcement techniques and University rules and regulations required.
  • High moral and ethical standards, strong communication, problem solving, decision making and analytical skills required.
  • Requires the ability to maintain departmental and Ohio Peace Officer Basic Training Standards.
  • Ability to learn and use First Aid, CPR and firearms required.
  • Basic computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets and databases required.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Professional leadership training such as PELC, CLEE, or FBINA preferred.
