About the position

The Cable Splicing Technician B (TERM) position involves a variety of tasks related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of aerial, underground, and buried cable systems. The technician will be responsible for splicing, transferring, repairing, and testing cables, as well as reading and interpreting engineering prints. The role requires working with both copper and fiber optic cables, utilizing various testing apparatus to locate and repair defects. The technician will also be involved in customer interactions, notifying them of work being performed and restoring services as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Add, place, remove, reroute, set up, rack, splice, transfer, repair, rearrange, bond, pressurize, and test aerial, underground, and buried cable.
  • Mount, cut-in, and repair cable terminal and load cases.
  • Rearrange service drops, aerial and buried jumper wire and step poles.
  • Read and interpret engineering prints.
  • Test, locate, and repair defects in wires for copper cables and fibers for fiber optic cables using electrical and mechanical testing apparatus.
  • Receive work assignments from supervisor or designated employees.
  • Make necessary preparations for splicing, rearranging, and terminating cable conductors.
  • Perform splicing operations for outside plant facilities.
  • Locate and clear troubles in outside plant facilities.
  • Determine air flow and pressure in cables.
  • Prepare cables for pressurization and maintain cable pressure.
  • Use test equipment to check for gas in manholes and empty water from manholes.
  • Work with torches and lead sleeves and iron cases.
  • Climb ladders and poles; enter confined spaces to accomplish job tasks.
  • Perform light digging operations as required.
  • Operate and maintain necessary trucks and equipment.
  • Promote the sale of services and products.
  • Contact customers face-to-face regarding work being performed.
  • Complete all related administrative paperwork.

Requirements

  • Must meet safety-related requirements including OSHA standards.
  • Ability to perform physical requirements of the job, including lifting items up to 100 pounds.
  • Valid state driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to drive a vehicle with manual gearshift.
  • Must pass an alcohol and drug test if a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required.
  • Security background investigation may be required.
