About The Position

The Fabrication Buyer/Planner is responsible for procurement, material planning, and fabrication schedule coordination to ensure uninterrupted production flow and on-time delivery. This role manages raw material purchasing, supplier performance, work order prioritization, and fabrication shop scheduling while balancing capacity, labor availability, and customer demand. The ideal candidate serves as the key link between supply chain, production, and operations to drive efficiency and minimize disruptions.

Requirements

  • 3–7+ years in buyer/planner, production planning, or scheduling roles in a fabrication or manufacturing environment.
  • Experience scheduling within Sheet metal fabrication
  • Welding and assembly operations
  • High-mix / low-volume production
  • Make-to-Order manufacturing
  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems.
  • Strong proficiency in MS Excel for scheduling and reporting.
  • Strong sense of urgency
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to reprioritize quickly
  • Cross-functional communication
  • Problem-solving under pressure

Responsibilities

  • Procure raw materials and other materials related to fabrication as needed and the management of the purchase orders, confirmations and delivery schedules.
  • Maintain accurate material requirements through MRP/ERP planning systems.
  • Analyze demand forecasts and production schedules to ensure material availability.
  • Establish and maintain safety stock, reorder points, and inventory targets.
  • Monitor excess, obsolete, and slow-moving inventory.
  • Assist in root cause analysis for shortages and inventory discrepancies as needed.
  • Develop and maintain the daily and weekly fabrication production schedule based on customer demand, priorities, and capacity.
  • Sequence and release fabrication orders to optimize machine utilization and labor efficiency.
  • Coordinate schedules across fabrication processes such as: Cutting Welding Forming/Bending Finishing/Paint Assembly
  • Balance workloads across departments to avoid bottlenecks.
  • Monitor schedule adherence and adjust priorities based on urgent orders, downtime, or material constraints.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and production leads to identify capacity limitations.
  • Track work-in-process (WIP) and communicate completion risks proactively.
  • Ensure fabrication schedules align with downstream assembly or customer ship dates.
  • Support expedited jobs and recovery plans during disruptions.
  • Participate in daily production meetings to communicate schedule priorities and risks.
  • Develop and maintain the daily and weekly fabrication production schedule based on customer demand, priorities and capacity.
  • Sequence and release fabrication work orders to optimize machine utilization and labor.
  • Coordinate schedules across fabrication processes such as – cutting, welding, forming/bending, finishing/paint, assembly and etc.
  • Balance workloads across departments to avoid bottlenecks.
