About The Position

Denver Parks and Recreation (DPR) is seeking a Parks & Recreation Buildings & Structures Manager to lead critical operations related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of parks and recreation infrastructure across the City and County of Denver. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled maintenance professional to build and lead a high-performing, collaborative team. In this role, you will lead and manage the Buildings & Structures team, including Carpentry/Paint, Electrical, and HVAC, while developing, implementing, and monitoring work programs aligned with division maintenance standards. You will oversee operating budgets and resource allocation, supervise and support full-time and seasonal staff as well as contractors, and serve as a key point of contact for customer inquiries, including residents, City Council, and internal partners.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field
  • Three (3) years of experience at the type and level of functional or operational management, which must have included management of professional individual contributors.
  • One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.
  • Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
  • Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in implementing best management practices for facility maintenance in a medium-to-large municipal system.
  • Experience managing facility maintenance programs and projects.
  • Experience in capital equipment replacement including 5-year replacement program, research, vendor networking, industry trends, specification and purchasing process.
  • Focusing on collaborations with the Mayor’s Office on Sustainability as their goals relate to parks equipment fleet management
  • Experience in supporting asset inventory management using a CMMS system
  • Understanding of current DPR park standards relating contractors that perform work on parks property and restoration from their project on parks property, and protecting parks infrastructure from damages

Responsibilities

  • Direct and supervise subordinate supervisors and staff responsible for construction and maintenance across the Carpentry/Paint, Electrical, and HVAC teams
  • Develop and implement weekly, monthly, and annual work plans that align with Parks Maintenance Standards and support the department’s strategic plan, Game Plan for a Healthy City, with a focus on Every Drop, Every Person, and Every Dollar—Uniquely Denver
  • Participate in Capital Improvement Project (CIP) planning efforts; assist in developing and managing annual operating and CIP budgets; and oversee inventory in a fiscally responsible manner while meeting all budget deadlines
  • Allocate funds and resources efficiently to ensure successful completion of work programs
  • Monitor and maintain expenses within approved budgets and reconcile financial records with monthly reports
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with employees, customers, City Council, and internal and external partners
  • Coordinate projects with other City agencies, departments, and stakeholders; address and resolve sensitive public relations issues
  • Implement and interpret policies and procedures established by DPR leadership and recommend updates or improvements as needed
  • Review and refine work plans, methods, and procedures; establish priorities and schedules to ensure appropriate staffing coverage; provide guidance on complex assignments and foster innovation
  • Manage employee performance by developing performance plans, documenting progress, providing regular feedback, conducting formal evaluations, and supporting training and development opportunities
  • Address operational challenges by resolving problems, mediating conflicts, determining appropriate solutions, and promoting teamwork and effective communication
  • Document and address performance issues, initiate disciplinary actions as appropriate, and respond to formal and informal employee grievances
  • Lead recruitment efforts, including conducting interviews and selecting candidates for open positions
  • Inspect and approve contract work during and after completion to ensure compliance with approved plans and specifications
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations and requirements
