About The Position

The National Research Council (NRC) is seeking a Building Automation Systems Technician to support its Real Property Planning and Management Branch. This role is crucial for ensuring that NRC's building automation systems (BAS) are appropriate, operational, maintained, and updated to meet the monitoring requirements of complex scientific buildings. The technician will be involved in network design, troubleshooting, repair, improvements, and managing external service providers. As the BAS subject matter expert, the incumbent will provide training, technical support, and operational guidance to other trades personnel working with direct digital controls (DDC). The role ensures control systems deliver effective energy management, operate safely, and that network data is securely protected and backed up. System analysis using automation software and programming changes to enhance operation and energy efficiency are also key aspects of this position. Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Systems or in a field relevant to the position. An equivalent combination of a trade certificate in HVAC or Electrical and experience may also be considered.
  • Significant and recent experience designing, programming, maintaining and troubleshooting building automation systems (BAS).
  • Significant and recent experience analyzing and resolving control system issues involving sensors, controllers and network architecture.
  • Experience managing service providers and coordinating preventative maintenance activities.
  • Experience providing technical training related to BAS and DDC systems.
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting mechanical and electrical drawings to support system configuration and operations.
  • Reliability Status (verification of background information over a period of 5 years is required).
  • English language proficiency.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong knowledge of BAS control systems, including control software, networking protocols, and their integration with building mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Ability to program and troubleshoot complex laboratory HVAC and low voltage electrical control systems.
  • Knowledge of Direct Digital Control (DDC) in closed-loop systems.
  • Ability to read and write BAS programming.
  • Ability to read and understand mechanical, architectural and electrical drawings and logic controls.
  • Solid knowledge of Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs) associated with the maintenance, verification, repair and/or installation of mechanical or electrical machinery in critical zones.
  • Solid knowledge of hand and power tools and/or material handling equipment in compliance with WHMIS and other safety procedures.
  • Ability to analyze system trends and recommend improvements for energy conservation.
