About The Position

Provides information, counseling, and support to WIC prenatal and postpartum participants to assist them in breastfeeding. This role involves managing a caseload of WIC clients, providing education and support for breastfeeding concerns, conducting in-clinic evaluations, and referring mothers to appropriate resources. The position also includes teaching support groups, issuing breast pumps, assisting with breastfeeding promotion, and mentoring new peer counselors. The schedule is 20-28 hours per week during business hours, with specific days and times determined by clinic needs and candidate availability.

Requirements

  • Has breastfed at least one baby (does not have to be currently breastfeeding).
  • Must be bilingual in English and Spanish, and requires reading, writing, and speaking both English and Spanish fluently without the use of a translation app or program.
  • Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help other mothers enjoy a positive experience.
  • Must pass a required background check through fingerprinting and enrollment in the continuous RAP Back (Record of Arrest and Prosecution Back) program.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Knowledge of Women, Infants and Children Program.
  • Document.
  • Make telephone calls and support breastfeeding moms.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Work effectively with people from a variety of social, ethnic, economic, educational, and professional backgrounds.

  • Manage own time, priorities, and resources to achieve goals.

Responsibilities

  • Receives a caseload of WIC clients and makes routine periodic contacts with all assigned clients.
  • Provides information, breastfeeding education and support for women in managing common maternal and infant breastfeeding concerns.
  • Provides in-clinic evaluation as needed.
  • Refers mothers, according to clinic-established protocols, to the WIC Designated Breastfeeding Expert or Nutritionist, the mother’s health care provider, and other community resources as needed.
  • Teaches and facilitates breastfeeding support groups and/or classes.
  • Issues hand and electric breast pumps to qualified mothers and documents issuance.
  • Assists in establishing a breastfeeding friendly clinic and helps with special projects, such as breastfeeding promotion month and bulletin boards.
  • Attends required trainings and/or meetings to increase knowledge and skills of breastfeeding, and the WIC program.
  • Mentors new Breastfeeding Peer Counselors.
