About the position

The Botany Technician position at the Great Basin Institute involves participating in various botanical projects, focusing on data entry, reporting, and supporting invasive plant management efforts. The role includes designing interpretive gardens, coordinating with resource specialists, and preparing for the upcoming botany field season. This seasonal position is based in South Lake Tahoe, CA, and requires a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates with resource specialists in planning work.
  • Develops plans to collect data for habitat and species condition analyses.
  • Keeps records of all data and produces maps of survey areas.
  • Schedules, organizes, and executes botanical projects involving native and/or non-native species.
  • Resolves common administrative and safety concerns related to the projects.
  • Improves, adapts, and develops techniques, methods, and equipment based on experience and prescribed procedures.
  • Determines need and recommends equipment requirements for botanical projects.
  • Compiles and summarizes data obtained from surveys, inventories, and monitoring.
  • Uses computer systems and software for recording, organizing, storing, and analyzing data.
  • Provides detailed reports on work methods, data collected, and project monitoring.
  • Evaluates data and makes recommendations for habitat improvement.
  • Assists with analysis, interpretation, and refinement of botanical data.
  • Participates in the development of overall plant project plans and programs.
  • Arranges for and lays out study sites for plant habitats and populations.
  • Develops data required for studies by collecting and checking samples.
  • Organizes collections and verifies plant habitats and populations data.
  • Researches background material.
  • Maintains a variety of equipment.
  • Assists in training programs for identifying plant infestations.
  • Prepares and presents educational materials on noxious weeds.
  • Collects data and enters it into databases; generates reports from databases.
  • Produces accurate maps of noxious weed infestations using GIS and GPS technologies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in natural resources field with relevant coursework in plant identification, plant taxonomy, plant ecology, and/or invasive plant management.
  • Knowledge of Lake Tahoe Basin flora, both native and non-native.
  • Practical knowledge of applicable techniques in biology, GIS, database technology, and sampling systems.
  • Skill in communicating orally and in writing to share analytical results.
